About Us

Whether you're a regular part of CBC Student Ministries or checking out the Barn or Torrid for the first time, we want you to be able to learn a little more about who we are.  So take a look at what we believe and why we're doing what we do.

What we believe:
We want to help students from 6-12th grade discover Jesus, ask questions, take ownership CBC_MissionLogoof their faith, and allow it to impact the way we live at home, in school, with friends…anytime.

We know that the gospel changes everything and desire to see students grow deeper in love with God, his people, his Word, and his mission all to bring glory to God.

  • We are worse off than we could ever imagine
  • What Jesus Christ did is greater than we could ever know
  • When we belong to Jesus, we are better off than we could ever dream (Tim Keller)

Our goal for our students, leaders, families, and church can be found in Matthew 22:36-39
“Teacher, what is the greatest commandment?”
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'"

What we do:

There's a lot you can get involved in at CBC Students.  Our desire is that you will make friends, have fun, and learn about God in the process at Torrid and the Barn. We want to weave these things into everything we do, whether it's a weekly meeting, a monthly event, or different service opportunities we have.

Here's some things you'll want to be a part of:

  • Monthly Events
Typically each month, we will have a weekend event you'll want to be a part of.  A time to have fun, meet people, and a great opportunity to invite friends to join us. You will need a permission form on file for any of our events.  The form is good for 1 year from July 1 to June 30.
Events range from active, high-energy games to slower-paced hang out nights.  Dart Wars, Mystery Dinner, Fall or Winter Retreats, Year End Party, Scavenger Hunt, trips to a water park, CJ Barrymore's, and a whole lot more.  We're always looking for new ideas so we're sure there's something you'll be sure to enjoy.
  • Wednesday Nights  |  6:30-8 pm during the school year  | Torrid in Room 303 | The Barn in the Barn (obviously)
Torrid is a high-energy night that you've got to check out. We'll play some stupid games (yes, we know they are stupid, but they're still fun). We'll also have music, time to hang out with friends, a time in family groups, a lesson, and a snack.
The Barn is a little more laid back with more time to catch up with friends, a time of worship, learning how God's word applies to life, prayer groups, and more.
  • Disciple U  |  Sunday mornings (except July/August), 9:30-10:30 in the Barn
Disciple U is a chance to dig into God's word in groups and learn together.  You'll want to bring your Bible as we will get into it every week as we try to better understand what God is teaching us in it. Disciple U does not meet from July thru Labor Day.
  • Small Groups  |  Sundays during the school year, 4:30-6 pm, church campus or in homes
Do you want to really get to know some guys or girls in your grade?  Then check out small groups. Groups are broken up by grade and gender with all Middle School groups on campus and HS groups are here or at a leader's home…just ask and we'll let you know where to go.  Small groups are about living our faith together.  We were never meant to follow Jesus alone, so we get a group that will ask questions, help with answers, pray with you, and challenge you to live for Jesus every day.

There's a lot to do at Torrid, but we also want to encourage you to get involved as well.  There's definitely a place for you to plug in.  Some are 1 time events while others require a commitment to be a part of.  What area is best for you?

  • Service Opportunities
We regularly head out as a big group to help people in need.  We will head to Gleaners Community Food Bank several times during the year to package food for families and kids who need it.  We'll also rake leaves or shovel snow or do a few other projects as they come up.
  • Student Leadership  |  One Wednesday a month (see calendar)  | 5-6:15 pm in Room 302
This is for students who want to learn about what it means to be a leader as we do a study together each month.  They help us plan and evaluate events, set up for Wednesdays, greet students as they arrive, share their story, plan games and activities, and much more.
  • Praise Team
Music is an important part of what we do. We have music most Wednesdays (and hopefully Sundays) and we want to have students involved as much as we can.  If you sing or play and instrument, we'd love to have you join. You will need to try out for praise team.
  • Tech Team
From playing videos during the lesson to playing a CD while we play games, there's a lot of tech stuff going on.  We need students who can help us with lights, sound, and running computer things each week at Torrid or the Barn.  We are willing to train anyone interested in helping out, just let us know you'd like to help.
  • Web Team
Who doesn't spend time on the internet each week?  We want torrid.cbcjoy.org to be a place that kids want to check out.  If you'd like to help us get info up to our website or have ideas to make the site better, we'd love to have you help out.  Contact Jordan or Phil if you're interested.
