How to Read The Bible
Jan 7 – How to Read the Law
Big Point: The Law points to Jesus and shows us how to live like Him.
Key Passages: Psalm 15, Micah 6:8, Matthew 22:37–40
What We’re Talking About: The Law in the Bible isn’t a random list of rules, it’s God’s wisdom for life, given within the narrative/story of His people. By looking for the wisdom behind each law and understanding its place in the larger narrative, we see how, ultimately, the Law points us to Jesus, showing us the kind of life He lived and is calling us to follow.
Parent Follow-Up Question: Can you think of a rule or command in the Bible, or even a rule in our home, that makes more sense when you look at the wisdom behind it instead of just the rule itself? What do you think that rule is trying to shape in us?
Jan 14 – How to read the Prophets
Big Point: The Prophets aren’t fortune-tellers, they are God’s messengers calling His people back to faithfulness.
Key Passage: Amos 5:21–24
What We’re Talking About: The prophetic books use strong language, poetry, and vivid imagery to confront God’s people when they drift away from Him. Rather than predicting the distant future, prophets spoke into real situations, calling out injustice, hypocrisy, and empty worship while also holding out hope for restoration. We’ll talk about how to read the prophets within the context of Israel’s story and to pay attention to imagery meant to stir hearts, not just provide information.
Parent Follow-Up Question: Have you ever had someone in your life speak a hard truth because they cared about you? How do the prophets do something similar for God’s people, and what might God be trying to wake us up to today?
Jan 21 – How to read the gospels
Big Point: The Gospels aren’t just biographies of Jesus, they are carefully crafted accounts that invite us to follow Him.
Key Passages: Mark 1:14–15; John 20:30–31
What We’re Talking About: The four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) were written intentionally to show us who Jesus is, what He came to do, and what it looks like to follow Him. Instead of reading them as random stories or moral lessons, we’ll learn how to read each Gospel as a unified story that reveals Jesus’ identity and invites us to respond to Him with faith and trust.
Parent Follow-Up Question: When you read stories about Jesus, do you usually focus more on what He did or on what those stories show us about who He is? How might reading the Gospels as one big story change the way we understand and follow Jesus?
