New Song Devo: Only A Holy God

There is no shortage of things vying for our attention these days. Health concerns and politics are hot right now, but then there’s also the day to day things like work, family, friends. I’ve had many a night where I’ve laid my head down mentally and emotionally exhausted and I didn’t even leave my house! It’s easy to grow weary and discouraged and stressed trying to make the best of it all. But what does God say?

“Be still and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10a

Be still. Not a suggestion, but a command. To stop what you’re doing, thinking, wishing, and know without a shadow of a doubt that He is the holy, sovereign, good God.

“Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted in the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.” – Psalm 46:10

The command is followed by a promise. God will be exalted among the nations and throughout the earth simply because of who He is. He is our glorious creator, shining brighter than the sun and making the darkness tremble. He is an all-consuming fire possessing the power over life and death who reaches down into the pit to take my hand and call me His child. And what peace and relief I find in His care! What rest from my worried mind I find when I am still and reveling in the limited understanding I have of who He is.

As you move throughout the next few days and as we anticipate joining together on Sunday to worship our holy, sovereign God, I’d invite you to spend some time meditating on Psalm 46. In a world where so much is out of our control, may we turn our attention and affection to the One who holds all things together. May we find great satisfaction and delight by ascribing Him the worship He is due.

Only A Holy God

Who else commands all the hosts of heaven

Who else could make every king bow down

Who else can whisper and darkness trembles

Only a Holy God

What other beauty demands such praises

What other splendor outshines the sun

What other majesty rules with justice

Only a Holy God

Come and behold Him

The One and the Only

Cry out sing holy

Forever a Holy God

Come and worship the Holy God

What other glory consumes like fire

What other power can raise the dead

What other name remains undefeated

Only a Holy God

Who else could rescue me from my failing

Who else would offer His only Son

Who else invites me to call Him Father

Only a Holy God

Only my Holy God

Psalm 46 (NIV)

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth.

He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;  I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

 Hebrews 12:28-29 (NIV)

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.”

Isaiah 12 (NIV)

In that day you will say:

“I will praise you, Lord.
Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away  and you have comforted me.
Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid.
The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.”
With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

In that day you will say:

“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;  make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted.
Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world.
Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.”
