The Place

  • Golgotha (19:17)

    • An intimidating location

    • “If you cross us, we cross you”

The Proclamation

  • “The King of The Jews” (19:19)

    • Pilate was trying to be antagonistic, but he inadvertently stumbled on the truth.

      • See also Caiaphus in John 11:50

The Prophecy 

  • Dividing his clothes, casting lots. (19:23-24)

    • Fulfillment of Psalm 22

The Provision

  • Providing for his mom (19:25-27)

    • Here is your mother. Here is your son.

  • Providing for the criminal on the cross (Luke 23:39-43)

  • Providing salvation for us

    • John 12:32 - As for Me, if I am  lifted up from the earth I will draw all people to Myself.

The Person

  • No one takes my life from me, I lay it down on my own. John 10:18

    • He willingly laid down his own life.

The Point

  • Redemption and Adoption!

    • Galatians 4:4-5

  • He bears so much love for us. A love that isn’t just spoken, but is demonstrated in the most powerful way.

  • Are you part of those that have been redeemed, or are you not?

  • Are you a child of the King, or are you not?

Recognizing that all we have is a gift from God and learning to share what we have.

God Gave

  • God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son. John 3:16

    • Jesus is the embodiment of generosity.

Generous: A readiness to give more of something that what is expected

Our Generosity Should Be a Reflection of God

Generosity is An Attack On a Would-Be “King”

    • Money = mamōnas (μαμωνᾶς) - Mammon - everything we pursue in life. Riches, treasures, dreams, feelings, idols. Everything that isn’t God.

The “World” Hates Jesus

  • John 7:7 (CSB): The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me because I testify about it—that its works are evil.

    • Compare to John 15:18-19

A message for those of us who don’t want to be hated.

  • James 4:4 - Friend of the world = enemy of God

A message for those of us who enjoy looking for a fight

  • Romans 12:18 - as much as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

We need to live in the tension between these two passages.

Expect Persecution

  • John 15:20

  • Matthew 5:10

    • Persecution is a blessing!

  • Matthew 5:11-12

    • Rejoice!

    • A blessed inheritance

Hating Jesus = Hating God

    • Jesus makes a claim of divinity.

  • Why did they hate Jesus? For no reason.

    • skandalizō - to put a stumbling block or impediment in the way, upon which another may trip and fall. to offend

Outcasts

    • Outcasts: put out of your religious community, academic community, social community.

      • Did it happen? Yes.

        • Acts 26:9-11 - Paul’s testimony.

Why do they do this?

  • Because they don’t know Jesus or the Father

    • John 16:3-4

      • Jesus doesn’t want his followers to be caught off guard.

      • zōē (ζωή): life

      • perissos (περισσός): life to the fullest! superabundant or superior. Exceeding some number, measure, or rank. Over and above. More than necessary. Extraordinary. Excellent.

John 5:25 - …and those who hear will live

1 Corinthians 15:54 - …Death has been swallowed up in victory. Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting?

Festival of Dedication / Festival of Lights

A hostile group surrounds Jesus

  • John 10:22-24

    • How long will you trouble our souls?

    • Are you the Messiah?

  • Are you going to be like or great ancestors who freed us from a tyrannical empire?

    • Like the Maccabees they were celebrating.

You don‘t have the faith to see what is plainly in front of you.

  • John 10:25-27

My sheep? I know them and they follow me.

  • John 10:27

    • Incredible comfort for those who follow Jesus

  • John 10:28

    • Eternal life (a statement not merely of quantity, but of quality)

  • John 10:29-30

    • Jesus doubled down on the security of his followers.

      • No one will, and no one can, snatch us from his hands.

      • We love this message but how did the hostile crowd respond?

They picked up stones

  • John 10:31

    • An illegal act, but not without precedence.

  • They were highly motivated.

    • There wouldn’t have been stones readily accessible at Solomon’s colonnade

“For which of these good works are you stoning me?”

  • John 10:32-33

    • An improper accusation

  • John 10:36

    • “My life is an open book“

John never did a miracle… but everything he said about this man was true.

He’s got us in his hand

He knows us and loves us

He is the Son of God 

We want to be people who bear witness to WHO he is.

  • So that others may say “everything they said about Jesus is true”

‘el (Hebrew: אֵל) - god or god-like one; mighty one. Mighty men: men of rank: heroes. Strength, power. God (the one true God)


gibbowr (Hebrew: גִּבּוֹר) - strong, mighty or powerful. A strong, brave and mighty person. By implication a warrior and champion.

  • Joshua 1:14, 6:2, 8:3

  • 1 Samuel 17:51; 2 Samuel 23

  • Psalm 24:8


He is divine

  • Hebrews 1:3 - the exact expression of His nature

  • John 1:14 -The Word became flesh... the one and only Son from the Father

  • John 10:30 - I and the Father are One

  • Matthew 1:23 - God with us


He was promised

  • Genesis 3:15 - He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.


He was wounded

  • Isaiah 53:4-5 - Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds.

    • Pierced, crushed, punished, and wounded for us.


He is Triumphant

  • Jesus is the victorious one!

  • Hebrews 2:14-15

    • By his death he destroyed death... and freed those held in slavery by the fear of death.


Romans 8:31-35

  • if God is for us, who can be against us?

  • Who can separate us from the love of Christ?
