Child dedication is not a baptism

  • we practice believer’s baptism. (See last week)

Child dedication is not a guarantee 

  • not a guarantee of salvation

Why child dedication?

It reminds us of both the miracle and value of human life.

  • Genesis 2:7 - humanity was created by God Himself.

  • Genesis 1:26-28 - humanity was created in the image of God.

We’re recognizing and affirming that children are a gift from God

  • Psalm 127:3 - a special reward

  • Psalm 127:5 - a blessing

To acknowledge the challenge and responsibility of being a parent

  • Deuteronomy 4:9 - teach them and model for them.

  • Ephesians 6:4 - train and instruct

  • Deuteronomy 6:5 - a personal practice that you pass down.

Child dedication places children in the context of a larger family… God’s!

  • The church has a responsibility (you, all of us)

  • Philippians 2:3-4 - we are a family

  • Romans 12:10 - be devoted to one another in brotherly love.

It’s an opportunity for parents to surrender their child to God’s will and mission.

“He loved them to the end”

  • agapaō - agape, immeasurable and unconditional love.

Jesus knew three things (John 13:3):

  • The Father had given everything into his hands.

    • Jesus is always fully in control of His demise.

    • He is freely giving his life as a gift to His father and humanity to reconcile them.

  • He had come from God.

    • See John 7:28. Sent = pempō: dispatched or sent on an errand.

  • He was going back to God.

Jesus does something unprecedented

    • This would have been shocking and uncomfortable.

Sometimes we need to trust even when we don’t understand.

  • John 13:7-9

    • Peter immediately proves Jesus’ point.

You should do for each other, just as I have done for you

  • John 13:15 - For I have given you an example that you also should do just as I have done for you.

    • hypodeigma - an exhibit for imitation or warning. An example for imitation.

  • Don’t just know the word. Don’t just see this example. Do something! Follow His example.

This is our calling. This is fundamentally what it means to follow Jesus.

1 in 4 adults 18-24 contemplated suicide during the pandemic.

  • A 300% increase

28% of Americans are suffering from symptoms of depression during the pandemic.

Followers of Jesus aren’t immune.

Our capacity to love others is directly related to the degree we love ourselves.

How do we love ourselves without becoming self-centered narcissists?

Healthy self-talk

  • Be kind with the words you say about yourself.

  • If we talked to our friends the same way we talk to ourselves, we would quickly wind up with a long list of enemies.

Self-care vs Self-centeredness 

  • Acts 20:28 - attend to the flock AND yourselves.

  • Philippians 2:4 - not just yourself, not just others. both/and

Embrace God’s opinion of you

  • Psalm 139:1-3 - God knows everything about you.

  • Psalm 139:13-14 - you are fearfully and wonderfully made.

  • Psalm 139:17-18 - his thoughts and cares for you are vast and uncountable.

  • You are worth loving without strings attached. You are worthy of His thoughts.

Get in touch with your soul

  • Proverbs 19:8 - he who gets wisdom loves his own soul.

60 million people in the United States suffer from depression

  • 350 million worldwide (pre-Covid)

Why does depression happen to someone who loves the Lord?

Event- driven

  • loss of a loved one, divorce, loss of a job

Incremental

  • Small things that compound and build up

Doesn’t respond to strong-will

  • You can’t work your way out of it by sheer force of will.

A black hole of sadness

  • Matthew 26:38

Hits when least expected

  • It can happen even when life is going great.

  • It can happen even when we are close to the Lord.

It can happen to anyone, even people who love God.

  • King David, Jeremiah, and Elijah...

Our capacity to love others is directly related to the degree we love ourselves.

3 Choices

  • Tell your anger where to go.

  • Protect yourself from abuse.

  • Refuel emotionally. Fill your emotional tank.

I’m not struggling with this

  • Be thankful!

  • take care of yourself

  • It is easier to prevent depression and anxiety than it is to cure it.

I am struggling

  • Know that it’s not a life sentence.

  • Call your doctor

  • Find a competent counselor/therapist

  • Titus 3:4-7 - love, grace, mercy, salvation

He is Savior

  • Jesus / Yeshua / Joshua - The Lord Saves

  • Romans 8:38-39 - there is nothing that can separate you from the salvation that Jesus has provided to you

He is King!

  • 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 - this life is not the end!

Jesus Followers are “Sent Ones”

  • Matthew 4:19 - follow me and I will make you fish for people.

    • Not, “I will make you perfect people”

  • Mark 3:13-14 - apostles (sent ones)

    • They were with him

    • They were sent out

Salt & Light

  • Matthew 5:13-16

    • Useful

    • Representatives of Christ

  • Philippians 2:15

Ambassadors

  • 2 Corinthians 5:20

  • Representing Jesus in everything we do.

  • He is making his appeal through us

Witnesses 

  • Acts 1:8

    • As witnesses, the only thing we’re called to be is truth tellers.

    • Not the judge, jury, prosecution, or defense.

    • We are witnesses that Jesus is alive and that he has changed our lives.

Disciple-Makers

  • Matthew 28:19 - therefore go and make disciples of all nations...

Content and Conduct

  • We have something to tell

    • euaggelizō (Greek: εὐαγγελίζω) - to announce good news ("evangelize") especially the gospel.

  • The way we live should show evidence of the Holy Spirit working in our lives.

    • The life of a Jesus follower should be aligned with the truth of God’s word.

Redeem and Restore

  • Has the Kingdom been fully realized? No. But we’re called, as members of the Kingdom, to play a role in that restoration.

    • Revelation 21:5 - “Look, I am making everything new”

What does it look like to live life as a Sent One?

  • That’s going to look different in each of our lives. One thing is certain though, for followers of Jesus, it isn’t optional.
