New Song Devo: God Is For Us

God’s people have always had much to fear. I think back to the early narratives of Scripture – how the Israelites faced years of slavery and homelessness, constant threats from their enemies, and frequent temptation to lean into the idolatrous practices of their neighbors. The challenges were constant, but each struggle was an opportunity for God to reveal His fierce, determined love for His people. Each time they were delivered from an enemy, it was God, in His love, who delivered them.

I was recently reading about the dedication of King Solomon’s temple in 2 Chronicles. It was a great corporate worship gathering filled with joyous celebration. And then there was the moment when the glory of the Lord, His physical presence, came and filled the new temple. God dwelt among them and all they could do in response was fall down in worship and say “He is good. His love endures forever” (2 Chron 7:3).

This response of declaring God’s goodness and love was not just out of elation for that holy moment, but of everything that had led up to it. The hardship and the struggle of Egypt and the wilderness, the seasons of doubt and faithlessness (remember the book of Judges?), the years of war under King Saul and King David. God had shown Himself to be loving and good in the midst of it all, and now, faced with His presence, the people are moved to worship.

So it is with us! God’s past faithfulness fuels our trust in Him when we face trials and struggles, fear and doubt. God’s faithful love sustains us, comforts us, and drives us to respond in worship. The lyrics of “God Is For Us” point us to a later promise in Romans 8 where we are reminded of the power of God’s enduring love. I pray that as we worship together singing this song that you would be comforted and strengthened as you celebrate His faithful love that endures forever.

God Is For Us

We won't fear the battle

We won't fear the night

We will walk the Valley with You by our side

You will go before us

You will lead the way

We have found a refuge only You can save

Sing with joy now our God is for us

The Father's love is a strong and mighty fortress

Raise your voice now no love is greater

Who can stand against us if our God is for us

Even when I stumble

Even when I fall

Even when I turn back still Your love is sure

You will not abandon

You will not forsake

You will cheer me onward with never ending grace

Neither height nor depth can separate us

Hell and death will not defeat us

He who gave His Son to free us

Holds me in His love

When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple. The priests could not enter the temple of the Lord because the glory of the Lord filled it. When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the Lord above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying,
“He is good; his love endures forever.”
Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the Lord. And King Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty-two thousand head of cattle and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep and goats. So the king and all the people dedicated the temple of God. The priests took their positions, as did the Levites with the Lord’s musical instruments, which King David had made for praising the Lord and which were used when he gave thanks, saying, “His love endures forever.” Opposite the Levites, the priests blew their trumpets, and all the Israelites were standing.
2 Chronicles 7:1-6 (NIV)

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords:
His love endures forever.
to him who alone does great wonders,
His love endures forever.
who by his understanding made the heavens,
His love endures forever.
who spread out the earth upon the waters,
His love endures forever.
who made the great lights—
His love endures forever.
the sun to govern the day,
His love endures forever.
the moon and stars to govern the night;
His love endures forever.
to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt
His love endures forever.
and brought Israel out from among them
His love endures forever.
with a mighty hand and outstretched arm;
His love endures forever.
to him who divided the Red Sea asunder
His love endures forever.
and brought Israel through the midst of it,
His love endures forever.
but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea;
His love endures forever.
to him who led his people through the wilderness;
His love endures forever.
to him who struck down great kings,
His love endures forever.
and killed mighty kings—
His love endures forever.
Sihon king of the Amorites
His love endures forever.
and Og king of Bashan—
His love endures forever.
and gave their land as an inheritance,
His love endures forever.
an inheritance to his servant Israel.
His love endures forever.
He remembered us in our low estate
His love endures forever.
and freed us from our enemies.
His love endures forever.
He gives food to every creature.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of heaven.
His love endures forever.
Psalm 136 (NIV)

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:35-39 (NIV)
